California’s pension funds for public school teachers, employees and retirees (CalPERS and CalSTRS) have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Turkish government bonds. Assemblymember Nazarian has introduced a bill – AB 1597 – which calls upon the pension funds to cease investing in the Turkish government, and as our current Turkish government investment bonds mature, that they reinvest those funds elsewhere. By doing this, our state would stop the practice of sending our tax dollars to a brutal regime which spends money in our state to deny the Armenian Genocide and prevent California’s students from learning about it.
The State Assembly Appropriations Committee, and its Chair, Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher who represents part of San Diego, will decide on Friday, May 26 whether the State Assembly should vote on Assemblymember Nazarian’s bill. Act today by sending an email to Chair Gonzalez Fletcher, so that she knows that Californians support AB 1597.
